03 · ASK WHAT HELPS

Water for a little plant

Nila brings water for a little plant. The soil is dry.

She pours slowly. Soon, the soil is wet. There is still water in her cup.

“Shall I pour it all?” she asks.

“Look at what the plant needs,” says her father.

Nila stops. She puts the cup down.

The water has a job: to help the plant grow. More is not always more helpful.

Before using something, we can pause and ask, “What is this for? How much will help?”

A little more to think about

A useful thing serves a purpose. The same question can guide our reading: does this help us understand and live more wisely? This story is a first step toward asking about purpose, not a complete definition of yāvadeva.
